What Is the Transmission System?

The transmission system in your vehicle converts the rotational speed from your engine into the road speed that your vehicle needs to get from point A to point B. When your vehicle shifts gears, it generates heat in the transmission system. To reduce heat, your transmission uses transmission fluid to lubricate the gears and reduce friction. The fluid is especially important in vehicles with automatic transmissions because the fluid not only reduces heat and friction, but it also acts as a hydraulic fluid to allow the gears to shift automatically.

Why Is the Transmission Important?

Your vehicle’s transmission system is a complicated system of gears powered by the flywheel in your engine.  The function of the transmission is to move between gear sets to change the speed and torque output on your wheels. When there is a change between gear sets, it is called “shifting”. In an automatic transmission, the shift in gears occurs automatically without the driver’s direct input. In a manual transmission, the shift cannot occur without direct intervention from the driver. To do this, the driver must engage a clutch which allows the transmission to move between the gear sets which ramp up or ramp down the RPMs. It will allocate the necessary amount of power to the wheels of your vehicle.

What Kinds of Transmission Services are Available?

Generally, there are four types of transmission services offered, regular preventative services, not services that require transmission repairs, replacements, or rebuilds. These are:

• Basic Fluid Drain and Fill: Draining the old fluid in your transmission and replacing it with fresh new fluid.
• Manual Transmission Fluid Change: This procedure entails draining your old clutch (manual transmission) fluid and replacing it with fresh, clean fluid.
• Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange: This procedure involves the exchange of old fluid and replacing it with new fluid plus putting in additional additives to help your transmission operate more efficiently,
• Fluid Exchange Plus Filter Replacement: In this procedure we exchange the old fluid in the transmission system, add a new pan, gasket, and filter.

How Often Do I Need Transmission Services?

Like so many maintenance procedures, the make, model, and year of the vehicle dictates when service is needed. It is also dependent on driving patterns, environment, driving habits, and history of maintenance. The best guidance on service intervals can be found in your vehicle owner’s manual.
